2nd Meeting of the Contextualism Network

    Epistemology and Occasion-Sensitivity

Presentation and Objectives: July 2022 MLAG Meeting brings together members of MLAG’s International Network Contextualism for an internal discussion of the RG’s ongoing research agenda. The main objective of the workshop is to explore the relation between two ideas that have been central to various areas of recent philosophy. Both of the two relevant ideas first rose to prominence in a particular field – in the case of occasion-sensitivity, it was in the philosophy of language; in the case of disjunctivism, it was perception. Yet, both have also had an impact well beyond the field in which they initially emerged: they have shaped the treatment of a variety of issues in several areas. Now, while some authors have taken there to be a close relation between those two ideas, many others have denied any such relation – and some have even embraced one while rejecting the other. It thus remains to be settled whether there is any significant relation between those two ideas – and if so, what that relation is and how it matters to the issues for which those ideas are relevant.
