Abstract: While walking from one place to another in a known city, one usually blocks out information – noises, colors, objects – irrelevant to the completion of the journey taking place. One could say that when a route is well known, a process of automatization takes place, allowing the traveler to lose awareness of the urban context and its details, in favor of dedicating their thoughts to reviewing all the things that should be done during the day or dwelling on all the things that could have been, but are not. In the process, the city becomes blurred to different degrees: conserved buildings with great architectural detail, charming little coffee shops, or intricately designed large scale murals may still capture our attention even if we are deep in thought. Meanwhile, other city spaces become spatial “white noise”.

Parting from my urban photography project, the UUAE_project (Unintentional Urban Abstract Expressionism), I will reference those spaces – walls, doors, windows – in the city that are easily blocked out because they are considered uninteresting, unaesthetic, or meaningless. While doing so, I will argue that they are precisely the opposite, for they are a visual representation of the power struggles in the city and the contradictions of Capitalism. Referencing Henri Lefebvre and David Harvey, the presentation will deal with the production of space, the control of space (of what is visible in the cityscape), institutional violence, acts of resistance and the right to the city. Underlying this discussion, will be the question of the aesthetic value of these places as unintentional artistic interventions.

Yuiza T. Martínez Rivera has a BA in Environmental Design from the Faculty of Architecture and MA in Philosophy from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. Her Master thesis is titled “El hombre sin clan, sin ley y sin hogar: la bestia en Aristóteles”. She is currently on the Philosophy PhD Program of the University of Salamanca where her thesis deals with the idea of the city both in Plato and Henri Lefebvre. Some of her research interest are: Classic Philosophy, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of the City. She also is an artist and graphic designer.

La violencia de crear valores: un comentario del aforismo 211 de Más allá del bien y del mal

Resumen: Lo “político” en la filosofía de Nietzsche ha comportado siempre un carácter problemático. Las duras críticas al socialismo, al liberalismo y las serias reservas ante el desarrollo de la democracia moderna provocaron que el pensamiento nietzscheano fuese tipificado como elitista y totalitario. A pesar de esto, en las últimas décadas se han propuesto diversas soluciones a problemas de la política contemporánea inspiradas por la obra de Nietzsche. La democracia agonística (Connolly 2005), la biopolítica afirmativa (Espósito 2006, Lemm 2015), la ontología pluralista (Siemens 2013), e incluso algunos aspectos del antagonismo y la democracia radical (Mouffe 2013) son sugerentes líneas de pensamiento influenciadas por los aspectos “políticos” del pensamiento nietzscheano. Podríamos decir que el objetivo común de estas propuestas es el de producir (o provocar) una transformación de los valores que sustentan a las prácticas políticas contemporáneas. Ahora bien, para lograr esto es indispensable, además de proponer un nuevo delineamiento ontológico de lo político, el esclarecimiento sobre el sentido y el objetivo de la transvaloración nietzscheana. Por lo tanto, el propósito de esta presentación será ensayar una aproximación al sentido “político” de la noción de transvaloración en la filosofía de Nietzsche utilizando como eje explicativo el aforismo 211 de Más allá del bien y del mal. El objetivo será demostrar que, en toda transvaloración de lo político, ya sea agónica, antagónica, pluralista, o afirmativa, existe una violencia intrínseca a la transvaloración misma que simultáneamente constituye y excede el ámbito de lo político. Es preciso entonces repensar el aspecto político de la filosofía nietzscheana desde el momento (violento) constitutivo de la creación-destrucción de valores.

The violence of creating values: a commentary on the aphorism 211 of Beyond Good and Evil

Abstract: The “political” in Nietzsche's philosophy has always been problematic. The harsh criticism of socialism, liberalism and the serious reservations about the development of modern democracy caused Nietzsche’s thought to be typified as elitist and totalitarian. Despite this, in the last decades various solutions to problems of contemporary politics inspired by the work of Nietzsche have been proposed. Agonistic democracy (Connolly 2005), affirmative biopolitics (Esposito 2006, Lemm 2015), pluralist ontology (Siemens 2013), and even some aspects of antagonism and radical democracy (Mouffe 2013) are lines of thought influenced by the “political” aspect of Nietzsche’s thought. In general, we could say that the common goal of these proposals is to produce (or provoke) a transformation of the values that support contemporary political practices. However, to achieve this it is essential ─in addition to proposing a new ontological delineation of the political─ the clarification about the meaning and the objective of the Nietzsche’s notion of transvaluation. Therefore, the purpose of this presentation will be to approach the political aspects of the notion of transvaluation in Nietzsche's philosophy using as an explanatory axis the aphorism 211 of Beyond Good and Evil. The objective will be to demonstrate that, in any transvaluation of the political, whether agonizing, antagonistic, pluralistic, or affirmative, there is an intrinsic violence to the transvaluation itself that simultaneously constitutes and exceeds the scope of the political. It is necessary then to rethink the political aspect of Nietzschean philosophy from the (violent) constitutive moment of the creation-destruction of values.

Mario Javier Colón Sambolín Cursé estudios de licenciatura en psicología y filosofía en la Universidad de Puerto Rico y la maestría en filosofía en la misma universidad con la tesis titulada: “No conocer, sino crear: sujeto y experiencia en el joven Nietzsche”. Actualmente realizo mi tesis doctoral en la Universidad de Salamanca sobre la filosofía de la consciencia en la obra de Friedrich Nietzsche. He investigado, presentado y publicado sobre diversas áreas temáticas e históricas en la filosofía: metafísica, epistemología, filosofía de la mente, filosofía de la ciencia, filosofía política, filosofía moderna, filosofía del siglo XIX & filosofía contemporánea.

I have undergraduate studies in psychology and philosophy from the University of Puerto Rico and a master's degree in philosophy at the same university with the thesis: "No conocer, sino crear: sujeto y experiencia en el joven Nietzsche". I am currently on the philosophy PhD program from the University of Salamanca. My thesis focuses on the philosophy of consciousness in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. I have researched, presented and published on various thematic and historical areas in philosophy such as: metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, political philosophy, modern philosophy, 19th century philosophy & contemporary philosophy.
