Medieval & Early Modern Philosophy
The Middle Ages is a millennium-long period with an extraordinary importance in History of Philosophy. The contemporary philosophical vocabulary was mainly built and consolidated through many medieval translations and discussions, and the disciplinary organization of Philosophy was shaped around the university commentaries on Aristotle’s works. The philosophical origin of the Modern sciences (Logic, Metaphysics, Physics, Cosmology, Meteorology, Psychology, Ethics, Politics, etc.) comes from this process, which deserves attention and a deeper research. This intellectual dynamic and the confluence of classical sources from different languages (Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew) in the creation of medieval philosophical are the main research focus of the “Medieval & Early Modern Philosophy” Thematic Line, encompassing the study of great and minor thinkers. Both Medieval Philosophy research groups promote the study of medieval philosophies without chronological restrictions, preferring to explore the continuities and ruptures with both Classical thought and Modern Philosophy, with a theoretical interest in a close dialogue with Contemporary Philosophy. We promote research free from commitments to any school or doctrinal orientation.
